Why is the cost of cakes more than supermarket prices?

What actually goes into making your Bespoke cake Includes many things we never think about. Such as travelling to purchase the ingredients, ordering stock, delivery costs. Talking to customers, emailing and coming up with ideas. Filling the order forms, printing out the orders, plan each customer's cake order. Fill in the diary, checking stock. Replying to customers is all based within the costs.

Checking stock, ordering of the boxes, box extenders, colours, flavourings, sprays, etc all the little things that you don’t think of cakes having, such as the above, ribbons, glue. Replacing equipment, bowls, mixers, getting all items ready to be used.

Also supermarket cakes are made with more preservatives and additives and many ingredients. Mine are the basic ingredients with no added extra's All fresh and locally sourced, i try to purchase from other business's like myself to support other small companies.  You also purchasing a personalised, Bespoke cake. which is all hand made from picking the ingredients, mixing, baking, decorating and boxing up. No machines. No mass productions. Just me and my kitchen.  Each cake will always be slightly different to ensure its unique.

How much time i spend on cakes?

Some cakes need items making in advance such as fondant pieces which need to  be made in advance using a stronger form of fondant icing which dries hard enough to be stable on your cake.

Some items need cake toppers, which I need to sit and design, can take hours, then using a special machine cutting the toppers out.

The kitchen needs to be cleaned and sanitised before, after and during a cake baking session. After i have bought the ingredients, I need to weigh, measure and mix the cake batter. Bake, cool, store. gas and electric is used.

Then its time to crumb coat the cake in a thick layer of buttercream before decorating this takes a few hours until it is firm enough to apply the fondant icing. Takes a long time smoothing this all over. Getting it just right.

Sometimes cakes can take a lot of hours work. from start to finish.  some cakes such as drip cakes takes a lot more ingredients. 3 -4  packets of butter. it all adds up in cost. Once the cake has set.  usually the next morning then the decorating can start.

Using colours, flavourings, edible glue, ribbons, toppers, flowers etc. all add up the cost of the final cake.  Decorating of the cake, smoothing the fondant out, printing out a guide sheet, contacting customer, taking pictures, boxing of the cake. emailing for collections.

A lot of hard work goes into each and every cake from start to finish i often dont charge enough for the hours spent on each cake. but I enjoy what I do. I love seeing the end results and love seeing how happy my customers are when they collect their cake.
